Architecture rooted in place

Drawing on Wilmslow’s rural vernacular in a simple, contemporary way

The architecture is informed by a study of local farmsteads and rural buildings around Wilmslow and the wider Cheshire Plain. The emerging design draws on familiar forms and materials, including red brick, pitched roofs and carefully proportioned openings, combined with contemporary detailing.

The development takes inspiration from the character of traditional rural buildings, reinterpreting established architectural forms in a way that responds to the site's setting. Boundary treatments favour hedgerows, low fencing and a restrained use of walls, helping to maintain a softer, more rural character and create a strong sense of place.

The landscape strategy reinforces this architectural approach, drawing on the patterns and textures of the surrounding countryside to create a cohesive and legible setting. Native planting, informal tree groupings and retained green corridors help to frame views, soften built edges and support biodiversity. Streets and shared spaces are designed to feel calm and rural in character, with natural materials, subtle level changes and an emphasis on pedestrian priority. Together, these elements contribute to a place that feels both rooted in its context and responsive to contemporary living.
